Coach Nick Saban and The University of Alabama football program has been tearing up the recruiting trail for the 2021 cycle. Already the Tide has landed verbal commitments from 15 student-athletes, including 3 five-stars. The latest commitment coming from OL Terrence Ferguson.
As good as that looks, you can rest assured that Coach Saban and Co. aren’t finished yet, with several prospects still on the board. Today we’re going to look at some of the best available targets that have Alabama high on the list. Evaluations of each prospect are joint provided by 247Sports and my own observation.
Damon Payne is a 6’3″, 295 pound defensive tackle from Belleville, MI, which is only a 30 minute drive from Jim Harbaugh and UM. According to 247Sports Composite ranking, he is the #1 ranked defensive tackle in the nation.
He boasts strong short area quickness and burst off the line. He plays with an excellent combination of first-step quickness and strength at the point of attack. Shows the ability to disrupt pass plays with a strong ability to pass rush. Has active hands and already developed technically with effective push-pull and rip moves at this stage. Also shows the strength in his base to anchor and make plays as a run defender. He is expected to announce his commitment on July 26th, 2020.
McKinstry is a 5’11” cornerback hailing from Pinson Valley High School near Birmingham. AL. He is rated the top prospect in the Cotton State and the 2nd best cornerback in the 2021 class.
He possesses elite ball skills as a corner, and also adds the benefit of playing the other side of the line of scrimmage as well, as a wide receiver. He shows the ability to constantly pluck the ball at the highest point and win in contested situations. He has yet to announce a commitment date.
Sorey is a 6’3″ ATH from Graceville, FL. While listed as an ATH, he shines best at the linebacker position.
Length drives his range on defense, particularly in pass coverage. Has natural soft hands with the ability to track and make plays on the football in coverage. Makes one-handed catches and plays downfield regularly. Xavion has not said when he will be committing.
Shemar Turner is a 6’3″, 260 pound strong-side defensive end from DeSoto, TX. He is tabbed as the 10th best SDE in the nation.
College-ready size for some spots with the space to bulk to 290-300 range if desired. Experience playing end and inside in a predominantly four-man front. Flashes impressive pursuit ability and straight-line closing speed relative to size. Generally a solid tackler who can arrive with power as a hitter. Shows encouraging pass-rush instincts when aligned inside. Shows the strength at the point of attack to fight through traffic vs. the run. Shemar has also yet to announce a commitment date.
These are just a few of the many targets that Alabama hopes to land. There is no doubt that the Crimson Tide still has plenty of room to make plenty of noise on the 2021 recruiting front.
