Alabama Football: A look at freshman standout Malachi Moore

by Stacey Blackwood

Alabama signs a lot of five star prospects every year, and there is always a debate on which one will make the biggest impact as a true freshman. Prior to this season getting started, it was not any different. Guys like Brian Branch, Will Anderson, and Drew Sanders were getting a lot of love, and rightfully so, with their “five star” status. All of those guys have played well for the Tide this season, but none have had the impact that Malachi Moore has.

Moore was not able to enroll early as intended,so many thought it would put him behind some of the other young players that were also competing for a spot in the Tide secondary. Instead of letting that get him down, he put his nose to the grindstone and worked his way into a starting spot against Missouri and has not looked back since.

I was able to catch up with Malachi’s mother, Mrs. Penny, just to get some perspective on this wild ride that the Moore family has been on.

What has it been like to watch your son rise to stardom as such a young player?

“It’s been gratifying to watch him enjoy the fruits of his labor, as he has always been hard working and diligent. He understands he has to continue to improve and work everyday.”

Did you expect his success this early on?

“We are not surprised because he is a student of the game and works so hard. However, it’s not easy to play early at Alabama and Malachi has taken advantage of that opportunity and does not take it for granted.”

It seems like several of the moms, especially for the 2020 freshman class, are a real tight knit group. Can you tell us a little more about that?

“The moms of the recruiting class of 2020 have gotten close by getting to know one another at games and visits. We wanted to keep in touch knowing that our boys will be playing football at Alabama…perhaps even being roommates! So, I started a “Bama Moms 2020” group me to stay in touch and communicate about upcoming events or just to reach out! It’s such a blessing to be a part of this group. We call the boys our nephews because all the moms are like sisters!”

As you can see, Malachi comes from a great home that helps keep him grounded in their values of hard work and dedication. It then comes as no surprise that Malachi has took over the SEC this fall and is on his way to being a freshman All American. It’s not just his consistency in performance that allows him to standout, it’s his ability to make game changing type plays for the Alabama defense. So far, Malachi has three interceptions on the season, and also has a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Getting playing time at Alabama as a freshman is not easy, but Malachi sure makes it look that way.

I would like to thank Mrs. Moore for taking a few minutes to answer my questions. She is always so gracious with her time and we certainly appreciate her support in our efforts to bring top notch coverage of the Tide.

Thank you for the story on Malachi Moore. You are correct, he does come from a well grounded family in hard work and dedication; but they are also a grounded family in Christian beliefs and strong family bond. Those four things hard work, dedication a great family and Christ help to keep Malachi centered. By the way, his Mom Penny received Payne Elementary Teacher of the year last week. Looking forward to many more great stories about Malachi.
