Alabama football recruiting

David (DJ) Hicks Jr. has seen his recruitment explode during the early part of 2021. He’s picked up offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Washington, Texas, and Alabama. This class of 2023 product has produced on the field and in the classroom. According to Hicks’ Twitter profile he currently has a 3.5 GPA. To go along with his great work in the classroom, Hicks Jr. has continued to add good size to an already impressive frame. Hicks looks to dominate opposing offensive linemen this upcoming season and hopefully during camps (assuming most COVID restrictions are lifted) this summer. He stated that his goal was to record 10 sacks this upcoming season, and to become the best player in his class.

Tide Talk Sports was able to conduct an interview with the Katy, Texas standout. He noted that currently Texas A&M and Oklahoma are the two schools recruiting him the hardest. Head coaches Jimbo Fisher and Lincoln Riley have made recruiting the state of Texas a top priority in recent years. Hicks stated on his Twitter post and interview that Alabama coaches Jay Graham and Freddie Roach were the ones to extended an offer to him. Alabama fans may ask what has him intrigued in the school, and the answer was quite simple:

“Alabama is a team that loves to win.”

Education is also an important factor for Hicks, as well as finding the right coaching staff to help him reach the next level.

I would expect his offer sheet to continue to rise. If he continues with his phenomenal study habits and tenacity on the field, the sky is truly the limit for this young man.

The University of Alabama secured their signal caller of the 2022 class this afternoon in Ty Simpson of Martin, Tennessee. The five-star signal caller from Westview High School committed to Alabama over the Clemson Tigers and in-state Tennessee Volunteers. Long thought to be a UT lean, Simpson began to consider other schools after the Vols fired former Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt. Jay Graham and Bill O’Brien led the recruitment of Simpson and this shows that once again, Nick Saban, never rebuilds coaching staffs… he just reloads.

Tennessee wide receiver prospect, Isaiah Horton, has trimmed his recruiting list down to just four teams: Alabama, Miami, Florida and the home state Vols. Horton is a highly ranked and touted prospect with the ability to make contested catches, make plays is constantly working to refine his route running. He is currently listed at 6’3″ and hovering around 192 pounds. His recruitment has been up in the air ever since the dismissal of former UT head coach, Jeremy Pruitt, and Alabama led by Doug Marrone, has made up tremendous ground in his recruitment. Horton is planning on committing to one of these four schools before April and if Alabama gives him the green light, I expect him to become part of the Tide’s ’22 class.

Jamel Johnson is a name Alabama fans will need to familiarize themselves with for the 2023 recruiting class. The 6’1″ DB out of Senguin High School in Arlington Texas has seen his offer sheet explode during the last few weeks. He has recently added offers from Texas A&M, Penn State, Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama. Even with his recruitment in full swing, Johnson is locked into brining Senguin High School a state championship; he stated that his current goals for his upcoming junior season is to “stay focused and ball”.

When asked about what are the main things things he will take into consideration when evaluating colleges, Johnson stated “Playing time, does the program feel like home and does the program have a big family feel”. Currently he does not have a group of top schools, but he did say he could see himself playing at Alabama and that Defensive Coordinator, Pete Golding, was the coach who offered him the scholarship.

On the field, Jamel Johnson, has the prototypical frame of the “new age” NFL corner. During his interview with Tide Talk Sports he noted his preference is to play man over zone and he is open to playing any position in the secondary. His length when combined with his technique will make him a formidable player on the backend of any defense. Which ever school he decides on will be getting an elite playmaker.

In a year unlike any other (thanks to Covid-19), many high school football players are having to put in extra work in hopes of gaining notoriety from any colleges. The state of Alabama always produces great talent, and the class of 2022 appears no different than prior years.

Ja’Kobi Albert – from Fairfield, Alabama – entered 2022 with a driven mindset to separate himself from his competition, not only on the field but also as a person. Albert plays with a fiery intensity on the field, understands his assignments and is always willing to go above and beyond for his team. Tide Talk Sports was able to catch up with the gifted athlete from Farefield Preparatory School, and he along with his mother were kind enough to answer a few questions.

When asked about what makes any particular school stand out, Albert replied that he is looking for a program with “consistency within the coaching staff, the culture of the program and feeling like he matters.” He went on to add that “playing time, graduating with a degree and willingness to play both sides of the ball” were also important factors in his decision making.

Ja’Kobi has a very supportive inner circle that is driven by his parents, his motivation and his trust in God. He is very mature and is a team-oriented player. Ja’Kobi reiterated several times that he is willing to play anywhere the head coach needs him to. Currently, he noted that his main goal for the season are winning a state championship for Fairfield Prep. As for recruiting, he stated, “Recruiting is a ride and when it stops, I’ll get off.”
